Scott Jones
Equipment: Apple Macintosh Classic II, Roland
JV-30 and D-550, Korg DRV-2000 processor.
Off to a good start. If you're a regular reader,
you probably know that I'm not a fan of over-MIDIed tracks. Here's
a case of someone who knows how to use his equipment extremely well.
This track, titled 'From Nothing', cooks--I never feel the track
is getting too stiff from quantizing. It's a jazzy piece in the
genre of Corea, et al.
The amazing thing is that this track is all
done with sequencing--nothing was played by hand, or at least not
in real time. Scott is very talented from a compositional point
of view. I could actually enjoy listening to this track for pleasure.
None of my close friends would believe it--I'm listening to something
for pure enjoyment! When all you do is listen to music for a living,
it's hard to listen for enjoyment's sake.
I might even go so far as saying that this tape
could be the single best example I've heard so far of what can be
done with MIDI--kind of a "How To" course on computers
making music.
The mix is superb. There is nothing that I could
suggest to make it better. My only suggestion would be for Scott
(who is really a guitar player) to lay down some guitar parts on
this excellent piece of music.
Summary: Smokin'!!
