Scott Jones:
Fusion Compositions CD Reviews

Here are what others are saying about Scott's playing and his C.D. "Freedom"...

In response to an email I sent to Bear McCreary:

"Scott,

Thanks for the kind words, man. I always appreciate compliments from musicians, especially such well-rounded ones as yourself. Keep up the playing, man. Your stuff sounds great. I've always been a huge fan of Vai, especially his Fire Garden and live albums...

-Bear" (McCreary - composer Battlestar Galactica)

----------------------

Hi Scott,

Your bonus CD's were REALLY cool and you're a very versatile
player which I can very much relate to as I've always leaned that
way myself. It's always good to hear guys like you who aren't so
one dimensional.

The Freedom CD is amazing! My tastes haven't been leaning
towards intricate composition like that for a long time, ...now I'm
lazy and would rather just improvise. haha

All your stuff sounds great and I'd love to hear you play live
sometime. Hopefully you can line up some gigs out here in the
future. Thanks again and see ya soon. Scott Henderson

----------------------

He's on a whole different level from the rest of us! There's Scott Jones on
top and then theres the average musician like you and me aspiring to do what he
does. -Royce Koshy

----------------------------------------------------------------------

"You're the best "unknown" fusion guy I've heard...
I think your compositions blow mine Away!"
(Derryl Gabel)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

"It's nice to hear folks still stretching the boundaries.
It's amazing... sounds like a labor of love"
(Steve Vai)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The music of Scott Jones about more than just guitar playing, though that is
his primary instrument. The music you'll find on his C.D. "Freedom" is all
about intense and meticulously crafted composition. To say this will be a
landmark fusion release is an understatement. Scott embodies that magic
often employed by the likes of Tribal Tech, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock
and the like, while not aping his heroes and allowing his own voice to shine.
Eric Hoffman, Progressive Arts Music

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott Jones has been received very well by Gnarly Geezer fans. His new CD
"Freedom" will become a classic in the future of this budding artist.

--Tom Voli, Gnarly Geezer Records

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott Henderson, Wayne Krantz, Kazumi Watanabe, Bill Connors, Shawn Lane, TJ
& Brett, Gambale... these cats had better watch out because Scott Jones,is
going to be added to your libraries if you enjoy the above giants. He
performs all the instrumentation with an added saxophone on a few tracks.
...his abilities on all the instrumentation is phenomenal... I'd like to
hear how cats like Tom Kennedy, Anthony Jackson, Chick Corea, Jay Oliver,
Weckl, Chambers or Donati's ideas would fit with his vision. Oh yeah, notice
the giants that I selected...he's that good!!! He's on Holdsworth's label or
check him out at http://www.scottjonesmusic.com. You'll be glad you did!

I gotta say that I had a very powerful reaction to seeing Scott play. There
are a very few guys I have seen play in person, for whom the music really
does seem to flow through them rather than from them...it seems to come from
another space or source. I'm not a particularly religious guy (unlike Scott)
but I do believe in a force that among other things allows some of us to
transcend and uplift. I hear the voice of "God" in this sense in Scott's
playing.

--Rob Quail, Toronto Ontario

----------------------------------------------------------------

Heads-up folks!

Yet another EER-MUSIC.com joyous find!

This is the GOOD stuff!

Trust me, just order this now. Imagine Chick Corea jamming with
Holdsworth and MacAlpine with a dash of Gong vibes and Bob Berg-ish
sax. Schweeeettttt!

At least someone remembers still, just what great fusion really sounds
like.

--John W. Patterson, http://EER-MUSIC.com
----------------------------------------------------------------

There's some great playing here; Scott Jones is obviously an extremely
talented guy!

I'll give it a thumbs up...these are some of the best
sequenced drums I've heard...

It's a terrific debut, and I really look forward to
hearing more from Scott in the future.

--Mike Uchima, Fusenet

--------------------------------------------------------------

Great stuff on the cd. My first reaction was, "there has to be some savage
tunes happening at the church where you're the director." Cool melodies and
arrangements and the playing was excellent!

--Greg Koch, Favored Nations recording artist; Fender and Hal Leonard
clinician

Scott

I just listened to your cd and it's a killer mate! Man, I can't believe the
complexity of your tunes and especially the intricacy of the drum
programming.

I'd gladly return the gesture and send you a copy of my album but it's very
much a rock/pop album so it may sound a bit primitive to your ears.

Once again, congratulations on doing such a great job Scott.

Just great writing and also the musicianship is top notch!

Cheers,
Brett Garsed

--------------------------------------------------------------
Your CD is absolutely great!! I hear a lot of different influences from
Holdsworth, Henderson, Di Meola , Benson, and even a bit of Zappa...I'm
definitely enjoying it....man I got to tell you your writing is incredible!!
...and those unison lines on some of the tunes are killer! -Rusty Cooley,
Lion Music Recording Artist
--------------------------------------------------------------

Incredible! It reminds me of Corea's Electric Band's first CD + Scott
Henderson + Brecker Brothers.
I am assuming you did all the tracks yourself -
Lots of good energy and great playing! -Jim Manley

FORUM FEEDBACK..(Scott is an active member on many music forums on the
Internet, here's what his fellow forumites are saying)

ON CONVERGENCE:

Scott, this is not only jaw- dropping from a technical standpoint, but it's
exciting to listen to. It's like you're one of the few who remembered that
the term "Fusion" meant ' a fusion of jazz and ROCK'. This ROCKS. --Bob Left

You seemlessly integrate alternate picked chromatic runs with your
non-pick-based legato work. It's a nice contrast, and shows off your
considerably varied skills -paul saulino

--...you had some moments there that seemed to transcend their genre and
reach into the heart of everyday musical expressiveness of feel and soul.

--My jaw dropped to the floor at the end when you started burning!! Fast and
clean...WOW!!!

--...I think more people need to hear you!!

--Moments almost reminded me of Greg Howe.

--i wish i had this kind of phrasing in my playing..

--thats so much beyond ANYTHING ever...Hopefully people hear this...

--You are amazing. Your phrasing, vibrato, note choice and tone are
phenomenal. Its nice to hear someone tear it up without the use a completley
saturated tone and still be clear as a bell. You are an inspiration!

--Scott that was awesome - you are clearly a player with a great deal of
knowledge. I wish I could phrase like you did, that was great.

--Wonderful chromatic alt scalar madness! I loved it, Scott. Best thing I've
heard around here, solo wise. You put more into 3 minutes than I've put into
my entire career.

--Very impressive Mr. Jones! I'm blown away by the fact that you're so adept
playing both guitar and drums. That in itself is rather astonishing to me.
Didn't anyone ever inform you that being a guitarist and drummer should be
mutually exclusive? Nice work!

--Sounds very good indeed.
Quite Henderson/Tribal Tech like?

ON CHAOS THEORY:

--that's some twisted writing! I dig the angular melodies (though I'm not
sure I'll be whistling 'em any too soon!) Killer playing, too - most
guitarists who play drums aren't, uhm, very good. Really dig your solo tone,
as well.

--Scott Jones ......... he is the best unknown guitarist on the planet earth.

--With Scott Jones ....breathing down your neck, you need that extra burst
of 16th notes to stay in the rat race....-Scott Lerner

Scott Jones is the real deal bro. He is the type of guy who lives and
breathes music and is a master at his craft! (can you say multi talented?)
He kept on going/studying-- where most of us (myself included!) got lazy and
just kept repeating our old tired patented licks! I wish I had his
discipline!!

It is always a pleasure hearing your work. You continually blow me a way and
inspire me to play better!!

Every time I hear you play I am inspired to practice and sell all my gear
simultaneously. What planet are you from my friend? can I please have a ride
in the mothership when they come to pick you up?
That was some great stuff Scott. I love the attitude that shines through the
chops. You have this Picking attack that just jumps out at me. very
percussive, maybe it comes from the drumming I dont know but I love it, it
just drips with attitude and that is all I have so I can identify with that.
thanks for the music

Wow, Scott, the tension/release that you show in this song is absolutely
awesome! It still pisses me off that you're such a good drummer on top of
being a monster guitarist.

You've obviously been putting a lot more thought into your phrasing though,
I can tell.

It is truly amazing and obscure, your drumming and guitar work is
outstanding....some of the finest guitar work one could ever hear.--Steve
Snider

Scott, you are scaring me. That sort of playing is beyond my comprehension.
You have a definite God given ability. That is just unbelieveable....

Seriously bro, that rips. It's wild, and I would hate to have to tab that one
out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My head just exploded from the sheer fury...!

...it's just sick I tell you!

Scott, this is...quite insane. I'm afraid you've become a danger to yourself
and others and now must be locked away, where you can't scramble anyone's
brain. It's for your own good, trust me. This reminds me of one of my all
time favorite albums: Spectrum. And I KNOW that ain't you playing drums! It's
obviously Billy Cobham.

Nice work! And by the way, I quit. Anyone want to buy 8 or 9 lefty guitars?

ON THE BARITONE PIECE REFLECTION OF AN AFTERTHOUGHT:

Scott, I'm listening to your new song right now for the 2nd time. This is
freaking cool! Wow, you play the hell out of that instrument. Really nice work,
my man. Jeez. I love the chording, too. Nice note selection. And really
excellent rhythmic movement throughout the piece. It seemed purposefully disjointed.
It's actually pretty insane. After three good listens, I totally dig it! I'm
gonna have to check out more of your music.

Stunning, absolutley stunning. I LOVED IT.

That's strange beautifful music Scott !
That's great.

Simply amazing...

That is just beautiful, man!! Incredible sound, wonderful textures!! Love the
composition.

Music like this is why I DON'T do drugs... Wow...nuthin' else to say...Wow...

Wow, that was very cool! Sounds very keyboard-ish at times, sometimes slap
bass-ish, very mellow, melodic yet dissonant at the same time. Good s*** man,
Where can I get your cd?

Scott, I've always dug your stuff... But this was the hippest stuff I have
heard out of you. Brilliant. -Ed DeGenaro

I really dig your stuff, I love fast and wild dissonant jazz/fusion. I hope
to one day be able to play the stuff running through my head But anyways,
you are a total inspiration. Keep kicking a**!

Really amazing sounding. You have a very unique phrasing that
is both dissonant and pleasing, if that makes sense...

I completely dig your ideas and playing...Keep rocking this little world of
ours...

...a killer piece. Lots of good and inventive ideas in there. Pretty mind
boggling.

...this is some serious good stuff, i really dig it man! This is kinda weird
music to me, modern classical with jazz influences, or is it modern/free
jazz...? ...Sounds very interesting, sounds quite difficult as well....

I half expected Billy Cobham to come in with a blistering percussion figure,
and for you to come in over the top with a MJM-flavored hurricane of fusion
riffs on a "regular" guitar, as only you can do!

Very tasty stuff, Scott. Interesting composition. The instrument's "snap"
reminds me of Stanley Clarke's old material.

Whoa....where have you been all my life? If Pat Metheney were a woman,
Scofield would be the father and Scott would be their illegite love-child...
And you may quote me on that for your homepage.

ON GIANT STEPS-2003 (unreleased):

Excellent playing and awesome tone!!

Scott,

That rules!!!! Awesome!

Holy Coltrane, Batman; that is impressive.

Man that was beautiful! You are the caliber of player I have been trying to
become....I have been studying Jazz/Fusion concepts on my own for a while and
you got it bro! Very inspiring...you legato technique is refined man...very
Holdsworth influenced...Just checked out the mp3's on your
site....monstrous.....thanks for making my day!

...really nice ... really fusion ...
You definitely have a ease of improvising and You give it the swing which I
like that much in jazz !!!

...great job! very Holdsworth-esque!

Excellent! Nice interpretation. Some of those runs are absolutely scary. The
tone is killer!

I liked it a lot. Some of the fast runs were unbelievable.

Love the playing Scott...

Man that run that you play at 00:39 is UNREAL!

I think I prefer the tone on this version as opposed to the first one because
I've always been a fan of the mildly distorted guitar tone over the changes,
ala Sco. However I'm also a big fan of the long uninterrupted lines which was
your first version had alot of. Ahh what the hell, they both ROCK!

Personally, i'm impressed with ANYONE who could blow over Giant Steps and
make harmelodic sense, so my hat is off!

Anyway, that is a nice interpretation. It is an interesting mix of a 'modern'
approach to guitar over a set of changes we are used to hearing done in a
more traditional style - well, traditional now. Then, it was as avant garde as
hell, so, maybe it is a fitting contrast after all.

I really like how you hang in the pocket in a relaxed way, then just blow.
That seems like the right attitude for a Coltrane number. It all sounds easy and
unrushed, even when you rip.

I don't have a problem with the tone either. Though I think the short delay
obscures some of the detail and texture of the basic tone. Adds a kind of
hollowness. The fluidity is spot on though.

Great Playing ! Anyone who can solo over those changes is a prime time
playuh!!!!

I am very impressed by your playing skills - your interpretation of Giant
Steps reminds me very much of Scott Henderson's... amazing!

Wow! You are awe inspiring as usual.

Beautiful!!!! I've listened to quite a bit of your playing on here and you
sound great. The tone is killer also.

Scott! What amazing tone and choice of notes! You play over this like
Coltrane played over it; seemingly perfect in every way and could go on forever, with
sometimes the strangest notes from the key managing to work great! I'm quite
impressed, I hope to hear more of this from you; I personally love playing
over changes and challenging myself to improve on getting what's in my brain out
to the fretboard. It's a huge improvement from your first recording of it, and
I loved the original (it's still on my computer)

This is up there with Scott Henderson's playing over it (Must be the name Scott, hmm....

Congrats on a great "electric guitarist's take" of this classic - everything
in your version sounds pretty much like I wish I'd be able to make it sound...

The playing here is superb ( i must say that your fast legato lines sound
incredibly well )

WOW. That was awesome. I love what you did with the melody. I got a Frank
Gambale vibe from it, but that's just my ears. That lick at 0:39 is smoking.
Really nice tone, really nice everything in fact. WOW

REVIEW OF SCOTT'S MUSIC IN GENERAL:

Jazz is characterized by a strong but flexible rhythmic understructure with
solo and ensemble improvisations on basic tunes and chord patterns and, more
recently, a highly sophisticated harmonic idiom. If so, Scott Jones serves as
the foremost facet within the existing Jazz scenery.

Music, theoretically considered, consists altogether of lines of tone. It
more nearly resembles a picture or an architectural drawing, than any other art
creation; the difference being that in a drawing the lines are visible and
constant, while in music they are audible and in motion. The separate tones
are the points through which the lines are drawn; and the impression which is
intended, and which is apprehended by the intelligent listener, is not that of
single tones, but of continuous lines of tones, describing movements, curves and
angles, rising, falling, poising=E2=80=94directly analogous to the linear impressions
conveyed by a picture or drawing.
- Percy Goetschius

Scott Jones, you define music; aesthetically pleasing, harmonious sounds. You
are not only an adroit musician, but you are capable of weaving a nexus
around an array of tones. Note that I say; around, for you, unlike many musicians,
are capable of transcending the boundaries of recurring alternations of
contrasting elements of sound.

Your technique truly is impeccable, resembling that of Derryl Gabel and Allan
Holdsworth!

Often have I wondered whether your musical compositions are conceived through
the use of serial music; not pitch centric, i.e., there is no home key.

Thank you for your music, it has helped me immensely on my spiritual front!
--Bengt Nilsen, Norway
--------------------------------------------

I've heard Scott Jones do Traditional Jazz, Blues, Classical, Fusion and Rock and do all of them well, with
originality and style.

Satriani isn't qualified to carry Scott Jones' guitar case. Scott Jones is beyond him in every way possible,
including creativity/originality. And that's not an insult to Satch, cause Satch is a great player, but you can be a
great player and still not come near a Scott Jones.

ON COLTRANE’S COUNTDOWN AND GIANT STEPS

It's SMOKIN', dude !
Great sense of timing, dynamics, and space...
Wish I could play like that !

You're a very good player! Very seasoned.

Good bopping!
Very creative dawg!

SJ, wonderful chords on Giant Steps!
Great soloing. You're a major league player IMO.

...amazing, i really liked the phrasing ALOT...the playing in itself, amazing...

I think a clean tone, that's well defined, fits these types of songs much better than a big distorted high gain
sound. You can't "hide behind" the distortion... meaning... if you don't make the changes it will be more
apparent to the listener. Great job, Scott! You're nailing 'em!

holy smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
talk about talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you smoke man!!!! great speed,scales,licks,wonderful
tone!!!!!!!
i'll be looking forward to your release.
what guitar do you play?????

That's your best Giant Steps yet Scott... imo.
I even heard several Metheny licks in there. Nice reharms.

Fantastic! Smooth as silk. Killer tune to play over even at slow tempos, never mind that speed.

As always, quite stunning!

Sick. State-o-the-art for blowing over that tune. The chord reharms were, well, sick. Sheesh. How does one get
that good? Great job Scott.

Hey Scott, is was great! Awesome playing! You are one of the most versatile guitarists I've heard!

...and for his next trick, scott jones will buy a £20 guitar and a 5watt amp. we're talking bad here. with only
3 strings on the guitar, he will shame us. repeatedly.

Not Fair!
Make Scott play with his toes.

That was very nice Scott. But the assignment was "Girls, Girls, Girls". And remember, NO reharmonization.

Scott. You, sir, are a monster.

...if i saw you preform that live, i would stab you out of sheer jealousy. *stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab
stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab stab *

Scott,

That was brilliant as usual!!! I Loved it!! You da man!!!...as far as your playing ability is concerned---well lets
just say that you are light years ahead... YOU ROCK

NEW CLIPS.....G-3 STYLE TUNES

SHRED BALLAD #1

Holy good god mother of pearl!!!!!!! Regarding your playing.......... I'm speechless.

WOW! I'm picturing you with one boot up on the monitor wedge and flicking your pick at the crowd at the end of
it! BTW,great playing. Shred type stuff doesn't usually interest me,but I still recognize good playing when I hear it.

That was G3-o-lycious!

All you need to do is punch Vai in the face and take his sunglasses. Then your costume will be complete.

Oh, and grow long hair and stand in front of a giant fan while you play!

Oh, and you missed one key shred-god trick...

Gratuitous Floyd Flutter-trem work.

Scott, you are a monster and an inspiration!! I would love someday in my life to be able to even approach that level of playing. Another masterful showpiece....

Hey Hey Hey Scott!
I totally loved that sound you are getting... The alternate picking was deadly on the spot. I did hear the Satch influenced melody line. I also heard Alan Holdsworth
in the legato passages in the beginning of your "solo" as well. Perfectly thought out and done as well. I love your playing. I wish I could get one of your cds as I
absolutely love listening you you play...

Well....., I'm speechless.... but I'll try...

That was amazing. Incredibly fluid, definite Satch vibe, but with your own unique turn on it...

Nice job, Scott!

Absolutely inspiring shredding and musicianship, Scott, I really liked your tone in this clip. I'm gonna stop now before I run out of superlatives. It's a blessing having
someone so grounded as a role-model for us all.

Incredible stuff as usual, Scott. Supremely tasteful shredding.

Damn....you are scary, mate!!!....you and lerner both....."Oh well, back to the old drawing board"..Wile E.
Coyote - Super Genius

Your talent knows no bounds!! Killer note choice man, there were a couple of nice suprises in there, which I always love.

's not fair i think you should remove some fingers, that way it might give us mere mortals some chance of catching up with you.

your tone is lovely. what guitar/amp do you use? and most importantly, does your moniter have footprints on it?

I'm wayyyyyyyyyyyyy impressed. Seriously.

------------

SHRED BALLAD #2

Its players like you that make me wonder why I bother. Fantastic.

Scott here is something else...
he kicks my butt upside-down in music knowledge and improvisation and thats obvious...
...you are gifted my friend....
it was incredible as always....
it seems to me a little more expressive than the previous clips...
of course the skills and phrasing are jaw dropping...
great!!!

I don't think I can say anything more than "WOW!!!"
I someday hope to play like that, even if it takes me 400 years!!!

That is some of the tastiest, most passionate, most musical "shredding" I've ever heard in my life, bar none.
(I'm 44.) Must be your fusion and jazz background. I have not been this impressed in a very long time. Just heard
some Rusty Cooley and was totally unimpressed...totally unmusical garbage, IMO. But, this clip gave my ass some
serious chills!!! And, the tone was incredible too. I'd say you've totally nailed it, Scott. This is damn near the
epitome of guitar playing for my tastes. You know what would make it totally the nuts for me? Why not blend in
some of your fusion and jazz lines. Why does it have to be all one or the other? Throw some Mike Stern style bebop
into that clip and I think I could probably give up sex and food and just listen to your recordings for all of my
physical needs!

This clip insipred the shit out of me. I have touched my guitar just one night since last weekend's gigs (for
rehearsal), but I am headed upstairs NOW to do some serious playing! Thanks for the kick in the pants!!!

Damn dude! That is some of the best rippin' I have heard.....You definately have the "Vai vibe" in your
style. I have that clip saved on my desktop now, that way when I am feeling like I am playing good, I can lsten to
it and kick myself in the ass and repeat over and over, I suck, I suck, I suck, I suck......etc...

That sounds great!!!!!! Man, I love the inflections in your playing as well as note choice!... I the little vibratos, the subtle bends. Fabulous.

I really like that you didnt just blow through passages with blazing speed, but took your time and tastefully ripped.

After hearing that, I only have two things to say to you:
1) I need lessons from you
2) I'm free Tuesdays.
Great job!

wow...you're....GOOD.....somebody really needs to tell Satriani and Vai that you exist, so you can get on that G3
tour. that is, bar none, the best lead playing i have ever heard from someone who is not techically a professional.
...that playing makes me wonder why i even bother.

...it's such a pleasure to hear inspiring talent like this....makes me want to keep practicing! you really have
all the ingredients in your playing....skill, taste, phrasing, creativity, musicality. Thanks for sharing .

Holy crapski. OH man. I'm sitting here with this on repeat. This is crazy!! So good. Who do you list as
influences? I'm really getting into this sort of stuff now... and i need to know who to listen to to get some
ideas of how it's done - i think i should get a copy of your CD too if it's all like this!!!

i think you are probably the best gtr player on this forum, but i'm not as fond of this kind of playing as i am of your fusion stuff.

your strength is your speed, harmonic grasp, and ability to play against syncopated melodies and quirky
rhythm.....you are so very great and i look forward to your CD!

Now thats the kind of playing and music I love!! I could keep on listening to it over and over again! Wish I could do it myself lol...

Very enjoyable!! It's refreshing to see someone who can shred and still play with some feel and phrasing instead
of the usuall mindless wankering I hear so much of around here. Rock on bro!

.....you are better than the whole G3 together!

FREEDOM REVIEW FROM HOLDSWORTH FORUM

It's a very good album, which contains jazz-rock, fusion and jazz
pieces. Scott has listened very well to the masters in these genres
and came up with very interesting compositions, which are mainly
based on intrigueing keyboard and drumcomputer patterns, over
which Scott lays his wonderful solo's. His style lies in the traditions
of Henderson, Gambale, Lane and Holdsworth, while the
compositions have touches from Return To Forever and Chick
Corea's Elektric Band. In his jazz-tracks you can hear some
shades from Pat Martino. On some tracks saxophonist Bill Elrod
adds a couple of quite jazzy notes.

The album was first more or less released as a CD-R on Gnarly
Geezer, but Progressive Arts did the real release a couple of years
later, with a better mix and mastering and a couple of bonus MP3's
and bonustracks. Of course you should listen to this CD as the
work of a man in progress; the next CD, with a complete band, will
surelly sound a whole lot better, but when you start your
fusion-career like this you're a name to remember!
